Haciendo el altar: Básicamente se necesitan cajas de cartón de varios tamaños, para decorarlas con papel de china y poner encima todo lo demás. El altar se le dedica a un difunto o a varios, y se colocan en él cosas que el difunto apreciaba, comida, música, algún objeto, etc. Se deben tomar en cuenta los 4 elementos representados de la siguiente manera: El agua: se coloca un vaso de agua o de cualquier líquido puede ser alcohol, vino, té, etc. El aire: Es el papel de china picado que actualmente se consigue así como ven el de la pared ya listo para decorar. La Tierra: Son las frutas o plantas que se le coloquen al altar y El Fuego: Las velas o veladoras. Las calaveritas de azúcar o de barro tienen el nombre de las personas que hacen el altar o que recuerdan a sus difuntos. La celebración del día de los muertos depende de cada familia y muchas veces de cada Estado, en el centro-sur es muy común, en el Norte no tanto. Pero también celebramos el Halloween porque también es muy divertido disfrazarse y pedir dulces.

This altar was dedicated to my 4 grandparents and to an aunt who passed away 10 years ago. We ate delicious food and had hot drinks, we played poker and we were remembering our loved ones who are not here anymore.

La Catrina es la representación más famosa de la muerte en México, fue creada a principios del siglo XX por José Guadalupe Posada un caricaturista nacido en Aguascalientes que se burlaba de las clases altas y de todo el mundo al hacer dibujos de calaveras como si fueran vivos. Por ello en Aguascalientes es muy común que se celebre el día de los muertos porque además se le hace un homenaje a este gran dibujante.

Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts.
Scholars trace the origins of the modern holiday to indigenous observances dating back thousands of years, and to an Aztec festival dedicated to a goddess called Mictecacihuatl.
People go to cemeteries to communicate with the souls of the departed, and build private altars, containing the favorite foods and beverages, as well as photos and memorabilia, of the departed. The intent is to encourage visits by the souls, so that the souls will hear the prayers and the comments of the living directed to them.
A very famous drawing is "The Catrina" which represents the death, it invites us to remember that every day we should live as if it was the last one... enjoying and loving. Jose Guadalupe Posada made this drawing in the early 20th century he was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico. The same city where my parents live.
